Mounjaro is to be injected once a week. This can be done in three different areas: the abdomen, upper legs and back of the arms. If you decide to inject into the back of the arms, have someone assist you. Before this, the skin and pen need to be clean and prepped:

Preparing the Mounjaro injection

1. Wash your hands using soap and warm water

2. Remove the pen case and make sure the dose is correct and the medication isn’t expired, damaged and is clear to a slight yellow in colour

3. Select a new needle and attach it to the pen by pushing down the capped needle and twist until the needle is tight

4. Pull off the outer needle shield and keep this for later. Pull off the inner needle shield and throw this away

5. Slowly turn the knob until you hear 2 clicks and you can see the extended line in the dose window

6. To remove any air bubbles, hold your pen with the needle facing upwards and gently tap the carriage holder to move any bubbles to the top

7. Squirt a small amount of the medication out by pushing on the knob until it stops. Wait for 5 seconds and the dose window should say 0. (The pen has a little bit extra medication to allow for this and you still get the dose you need)

Dosage and schedule

Mounjaro has different dose options and follows a dosing schedule to help your body get used to the medication. Increasing your dosage too quickly or starting on too high of a dosage can result in increased side effects or serious illness.

The recommended starting Mounjaro injection dose is 2.5mg, administered once a week. You’ll stay on the same dose for 4 weeks, as this gives time for your body to adjust to the medication and increased doses. The most common Mounjaro side effects include:
